What a nightmare. I signed up for an alarm system when I first bought and moved in to my tiny little house back in 2003. My contractual agreement was with Tri-State Alarm, of Broomal, PA. The terms of the contract were for a three year period, after which it would be automatically renewed. Based on the sales rep, the auto renewal would be in one year increments. I was OK with that.
Well, not so!!!
I currently have my house up for sale, with quite a few prospective buyers. Since I'm ready to move, I contacted the alarm company to cancel. I was told that my renewal took place back in April of 2009, which leaves me two years and 2 months remaining on my current contract. I asked how that was possible, and Security Services said that the auto renewal period was 3 years, and if I had wanted to cancel, I would have had to notify them 60 days prior to April 2009. Now how would I have done that when back in April 09 I had no idea I would be selling my house. In order for me to cancel the contract, Security Services wants me to pay for the remaining time on the contract. That's insane, since I won't be in the house, and I can't force the new owner to take over the contract. This is a scam in the truest sense of the word. After almost seven years, and the fact the only GOOD service was when Tri-State handled my account, I feel like I'm being held at gunpoint to pay for the remainder of this bogus contract. Why are these types of practices allowed to continue? I refuse to be held hostage, and one more victim of these unethical business/contract practices. And, it's not about not reading the "fine" print on the bottom of the back page of the 14" paper, it was believing the crap the sales rep sold me!!!
