We called Powell on a cold, windy night the day after Christmas, 2007. Our main circuit breaker had tripped off, and it would not reset. Yes, they charged us the $99 just to come out and give a quote, which displeased us. The shocker came when they wanted $990 to replace the circuit breaker, basically just a 10 minute job! They had us right where they wanted us, in our cold living room with just candle light, and no-one else to call.
We were stuck, but we knew we needed to replace the whole electric service soon, and we needed heat and light ASAP. Eventually we settled for a contract beyond $6000 to replace the whole electric service, including plugging in the new circuit breaker the next morning.
I don't know why we didn't cancel the big job after getting the electricity on again, but we did not. I think it was a form of self-flagellation for being such a fool for dealing with these people. But we let them continue.
That is when we got our second big surprise. The men showed up a few days later as scheduled, and did an excellent job! They were clean, skilled, cooperative, did everything on a best-practices basis, like I would expect for a major commercial job. They worked between 55 to 65 man-hours total, and actually earned their high fee! It has continued to work perfectly.
So, what can I recommend? Powell gets a TERRIBLE one-star rating for their sales practices with the consumer. It is like they are saying, "go away little man. We only want big jobs." For any small repair, find someone else. But then, they get an EXCELLENT 5-star rating for doing the actual work on a big job. I could not ask for more. I will split the difference. I suppose they concentrate on commercial jobs, but figure they will do little jobs, too, if the customer is willing to take their sales abuse and overpricing.
