On June 18,2014 parent, S. Chavies contacted EDFIN and requested much needed help for her daughter for college expenses and financial aid services to help pay for college for Art Institute of California.
On June 18, 2014, S. Chavies completed documentation indicating her daughter had not received financial aid prior to EDFIN to pay for college. (documentation on file signed by student and parent indicating zero financial aid received).
Beginning of June 18th to September 17, 2014 all the FAFSA, State, Institutional Grants, Scholarships and loan applications were completed along with supplemental and additional verification forms to help student receive financial aid for college. Parent also completed a FERPA Agreement giving EDFIN authorization to work on student and parents behalf with the college Admissions, Financial Aid, Housing and other departments to help student receive financial aid for college costs.
On September 17th, 2014, student and parent was contacted by EDFIN staff and informed of additional financial aid of more than $5,000.00 to help pay for college expenses. Student’s total financial aid award is as follows:
Federal Pell Grant $5,730.00
Institutional Grant $3,672.00
Al Scholarship Program $1,950.00
SEOG $600.00
Art Grant $999.00
Art Institute Institutional Grant $250.00
Imagine America Academic Scholarship $375.00
Federal Direct Subsidized Loan $3,464.00
Bank Fee $36.00
Line of Credit $2,244.67
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan $5,937.00.
Total Awarded $25,320.67
Shortly after relaying information to S. Chavies that her daughter’s tuition, and other fees were paid for through financial aid, she was very happy. On several occasions S. Chavies contacted EDFIN to get help to pay for room and board; which EDFIN made every attempt, speaking with the financial aid office, housing supervisors and scholarship department with no additional financial aid being awarded.
It was advised by the housing supervisor since the student lives within distance from the college, that she commute. This is when the problem occurred, when parent needed help with housing costs and the financial aid approved wasn’t enough to cover all of student’s housing fees; parent was upset because she had to pay for remaining housing fees not covered by financial aid. It was explained to the parent that EDFIN helps families with college costs, but there is no guarantee that all college costs would be covered with financial aid.
On September 17, 2014, the Chavies family was awarded a total $25,320.67 in financial aid due to meeting Federal, State, Institutional Grants, Scholarships & Federal Student Loan regulations.
This case Chavies vs. EDFIN was heard before the honorable judge, with all documentation presented on both parties, in the Superior Court (Small Claims) where the judgement was granted in favor of EDFIN.
