My mother, as a condo owner here in southeast Florida for many years, has had a contract with Climate Control Services. They generally have proven to be marginally competent to incompetent, but because of her age and consequent difficulty in dealing with repair issues she has always renewed the Climate Control Services contract.
At one point her toilet bowl was not filling up with water to the proper level after a flush. Climate Control Services came out and told her the water channels in the rim of the toilet bowl were clogged with minerals and she needed a new toilet bowl for several hundred dollars and it was not covered by her contract. This seemed inappropriate to me for several reasons. Firstly, almost always the problem with a toilet bowl not filling with water after the flush is due to the ballcock not diverting enough water through its refill tube to the Douglas (flush) valve overflow tube which then flows into the toilet bowl and fills it up. Secondly, even if the channels in the rim of the toilet bowl were clogged with minerals, they could have been cleared with use of such chemicals as CLR or Lime-Away. I told my mother not to do anything since I was coming to visit her. The toilet bowl was fine. I could find no evidence of any mineral deposits clogging the water channels and I fixed the problem with a new Fluidmaster toilet tank valve for approximately eight dollars.
On another occasion she had Climate Control Services make a visit because of the way her kitchen faucet was working. When I visited her she told me after the repair it still did not seem to be working right. Upon disassembly I found that the diverter for the hose and spray was missing and purchasing and installing the part straightened everything out. Either Climate Control Services inappropriately removed the diverter during their “repairs” or they should have found it to be missing and installed one.
Last winter (2008) my mother called Climate Control Service because her refrigerator was not staying cold. They came out, told her it was the door gasket and it needed to be replaced. The cost was going to be approximately four hundred dollars (to replace a door gasket!) and was not covered by her contract. She declined the service and purchased a new refrigerator from a local appliance store.
Now I have taken over the condo and recently found the air conditioner was not working. We called Climate Control Services (still had a few months of service left on the contract) and the technician told us the refrigerant was low, that there had to be a leak but he could not find it. They charged the AC unit and said they would come back in a week and check it again. He also advised me that if they could not find the leak in a certain area, finding and fixing the leak would not be covered by the contract. Not trusting them I called an AC repair service that had an A+ rating with the BBB. They came out that same day and found the leak within two minutes. They explained how they found it and showed us where the leak was and what was needed to correct the problem. By the time Climate Control Services would have shown up to check the AC unit a second the unit was repaired.
In writing to you I am not requesting any satisfaction from Climate Control Services. I am simply not renewing the contract. However, you and the consumers who visit your website should know what a terrible company Climate Control is. I would ask you to give due consideration to lowering their A+ rating significantly. If you would like to post this letter in your reviews section I would be in favor of that in the hopes of saving others from having to suffer similar experiences with Climate Control Services.
