Our recent experience with Carmax was not only disappointing but frustrating. We recently purchased a car with less than 43,000 miles. 18 days later and having driven it about 25 miles a day it broke down. We called Carmax and were told to drive it back to them. We told them we could not drive it and were told to have it towed (it was still under their 30 day warranty you would think THEY would take care of having it towed). They kept if for 9 days, we were told the transmission had to be repaired ($1500.00). We had to take it back again 2 days later. The A/T Oil light came on and it still would not shift into gear right. They kept it for another week. Again a few days later we had to take it back. This time it was making a noise when we'd accelerate, would not accelerate past 50 mph and was leaking transmission fluid. We had had enough. We contacted their corporate office to let them know of our intention to return the car. They were going to have a manger call us. Never called. We drove there and were told the managers were not available. Under the circumstances we asked if we should make the first payment. We were told to make the payment. The day payment was due (we had paid already) we got a call and were told we could return the car if a payment had not yet been made (???). The next day we again drove to their location and spoke with 2 managers. We told them we would like to either get a refund or exchange. We were told they would check with corporate but that they didn't have to take the car back. They kept telling us that since we'd purchased an extended warranty they would repair the car and had already done so. So what if we hadn't purchased the warranty and the car had broke down a day after their 30 day warranty I asked. They didn't have an answer. The point is they do not stand behind their product even if it breaks down within their 30 day warranty. I will never deal with Carmax again and just as I would recommend them had we had a good experience, I have related our bad experience to friends, family and co-workers.
