Traveling from Delhi to Gurez, a remote and picturesque valley in Kashmir, involves multiple stages. Since Gurez is not directly accessible by air or train, you will first need to reach Srinagar and then take a road trip through scenic but challenging terrain. Here's how you can travel from Delhi to Gurez:
Step 1: Delhi to Srinagar
By Air (Most Convenient)
Flight: The easiest and fastest way to travel from Delhi to Gurez is to take a direct flight from Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi) to Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (Srinagar). The flight takes around 1.5 to 2 hours.
By Train (Delhi to Jammu)
Train: If you prefer traveling by train, take a train from Delhi to Jammu Tawi Railway Station (about 10–12 hours). From Jammu, you will need to travel by road to reach Srinagar (approximately 8–10 hours).
By Road (Delhi to Srinagar)
Road Trip: If you're adventurous and have time, you can drive or take a bus from Delhi to Srinagar via the NH44 highway. The journey is around 820 km and can take 18–24 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. It's best to break the journey with an overnight stay in Jammu.
Step 2: Srinagar to Gurez (Road Journey)
Once you arrive in Srinagar, the next leg of your journey to Gurez Valley begins. Gurez is about 130 km from Srinagar, but the journey can take 6–7 hours due to mountainous terrain and road conditions.
Taxi or Car Rental:
You can hire a private taxi from Srinagar or book a car rental with a local driver. It is advisable to hire a driver familiar with the route, as the road to Gurez is narrow, and you'll cross the Razdan Pass, which is often snow-covered or foggy.
Bus Services:
JKSRTC (Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation) operates limited bus services from Srinagar to Dawar, the main town in Gurez. However, these buses are not very frequent, and you may prefer hiring a private vehicle for a more comfortable and flexible journey.
Step 3: Permits for Gurez
Since Gurez is near the Line of Control (LoC), a special permit is required to visit the valley. You can obtain the permit from the District Commissioner's Office in Bandipora or through local travel agencies. The process is usually straightforward, and having your travel documents ready (ID, passport, etc.) will help speed it up.
Best Time to Visit Gurez
Summer (May to October): The roads to Gurez are generally open from May to October. During winter, the Razdan Pass is blocked by snow, making the valley inaccessible.
Winter (November to April): Travel is restricted during these months due to heavy snowfall and road closures.
Travel Tips:
Vehicle: Ensure you have a 4x4 or a sturdy vehicle for the mountainous roads.
Driver: Hiring a local driver who knows the roads and conditions is highly recommended.
Fuel & Food: There are limited services en route, so make sure you have enough fuel and pack some snacks or food.
Local Accommodation: Gurez has limited accommodation options, mostly in Dawar. You can arrange your stay in adva
